Job Posting This position exists to advise business leadership on Property & Casualty (P&C) legal, regulatory and compliance matters.
Provides legal advice on complex/ sensitive issues related to product management of personal and commercial lines property and casualty insurance.
The position collaborates and aligns on strategy, action planning, and communication with clients.
This role requires proactive counsel to business partners regarding emerging legal issues and risks and knowledge and/or propensity to learn related to personal and commercial lines property and casualty insurance.
This position is available in Houston, TX, League City, TX, Galveston, TX, Glenmont, NY or Springfield, MO.
What You'll Do: Provide legal advice to the senior leaders of the P&C unit on all aspects of property and casualty insurance including claims, rating and underwriting issues.
Advise on P&C regulatory matters, including Market Conduct Examinations and form & rate filings.
Ensure that the company conducts the property & casualty business in compliance with applicable local, state, federal, and foreign laws and regulations affecting the company, including U.
S.
state and federal insurance laws and regulation.
Provide legal advice in connection with the customer and regulatory inquiries and interacting with regulators.
Provide ongoing review and analysis of insurance policy provisions, forms (including releases), and claims practices across all lines, and provide recommendations for revising/improving where appropriate.
Provide legislative interpretation support to the P&C team on questions impacting the property and casualty industry.
Monitor and review new laws, regulations and case law; identify and summarize relevant issues; proactively provide advice to counsel to business unit on the impact of new laws on business.
Support the SVP of P&C in maintaining the division’s inventory of regulatory, risk and control requirements.
Work alongside various internal disciplines for P&C issues.
Evaluate current processes to create greater efficiencies.
Partner with litigation counsel to advise on P&C-based litigation.
Effectively communicate regarding all such matters with all levels of the organization.
Minimum Qualifications Juris Doctor (J.
D.
) Eight to 10 years of experience.
Additional Qualifications: Admission to the bar of any state in the U.
S.
Must possess comprehensive business insight and the ability to regularly engage in operational and business issues that extend beyond the core legal function.
Demonstrated ability to work well with and relate to company personnel at all levels.
Demonstrated track record of results with a reputation for meeting commitments.
Knowledge and experience with U.
S.
state insurance laws including P&C-specific regulations.
Strong critical thinking skills analytical and problem-solving skills with an ability to translate complex legal issues and concepts that are understandable for business partners and can lead to decisions.
Superior oral and written communication skills.
Ability to work on multiple tasks effectively and efficiently, managing priorities.
Motivated, resourceful and effective at working as part of a small, dedicated team.
Fundamental knowledge of insurance products, distribution systems, and claims processes, particularly regarding property & casualty insurance and commercial lines.
Draft, review, and/or negotiate moderately complex matters and agreements.
Fundamental knowledge of applicable statutory laws, regulations and judicial developments.
Conduct complex research and determine applicable and pertinent laws, statutes, regulations, rules, and other legal authority.
Preferred Qualifications: Eight to ten years of experience as an attorney in a law firm or in-house setting.
4+ years of experience in the P&C sector.
Prior familiarity with and understanding of insurance law and practices, and with insurance coverage and form policy provisions.
