ATTENDANT FLEET MAINTENANCE MECHANIC The Opportunity: The Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company Tug & Boat Fleet Maintenance Mechanic position requires a diverse practical knowledge of various diesel propulsion and auxiliary machinery, electric generators, pneumatic and hydraulic systems, compressors and other mechanical equipment, components and attachments of marine machinery.
This job standard requires advanced and detailed knowledge of operating characteristics for the machinery and systems described along with their functional relationships.

Requirements: Have excellent communication skills to facilitate the transfer of information succinctly among all relevant personnel and colleagues.
You must have a strong sense of TEAM, to share information and assist other teammates wherever and whenever possible to the betterment of the department and GLDD.
Develop and defend your vision for the fleet, GLDD and yourself to guide long range maintenance plans for vessels and submit itemized annual vessel repair and maintenance requests to the Tug & Boat Fleet Maintenance Superintendent.
Be skilled in the use of various small and large hand tools, precision instruments and portable machines as required by the trade.
Be proficient in performing repairs on a wide variety of propulsion marine diesel engines (esp.
Detroit, John Deere, Cat, Cummins, Isuzu), and reduction gears (esp.
Twin Disc, ZF, Allison, Cat), fuel systems, pneumatic clutches, shafting, rudders, towing/weight/cargo handling machinery, various machine components and auxiliary machinery, such as electrical power plants, pumps, hydraulics, steering gear etc.
Interpret blueprints, diagrams, and other drawings with average or better ability to solve mathematical problems.
Use standard handbook formulas in performing dimensional measurements and maintaining required tolerances.
Participate/Assist in bid package evaluations, develop service requisitions related to dock-side and dry-dock events in Enterprise when appointed.
Serve as the GLDD designated representative in shipyards, monitoring and overseeing all aspects of dry-dock and dock-side repairs, modifications and revisions when appointed.
Perform maintenance, troubleshooting and repair to AC and DC electrical systems, electro- hydraulic steering systems, controls and equipment to include practical knowledge of electric principles and electrical safety standards.
Be skilled in the use of various test equipment, metering and measuring devices such as multi- meters, feeler gauges, dial indicators, micrometers, calipers, tachometers, visgages, hydrometers etc.

Comply with and carry out all requirements as set forth in Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company directives such as the Responsible Carrier Program, Safety Management Manual, etc and all other regulatory agency policies as directed or required by law.
Have a basic understanding of accounting principles and excellent computer skills to requisition engineering parts and supplies as required to perform machinery repairs and manage spare parts inventory as related to this job description.
Must become proficient in the use of the "Enterprise" Maintenance and Purchasing Program, CAD and/or Sketchup.
Must be proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word and other Microsoft Office applications.
Implement and stay current with USCG UTV Sub-chapter M regulations.
Enroll in USCG UTV course and be an expert in guiding our efforts toward compliance with upcoming regulations.
Additional Requirements: The Maintenance Mechanic is subject to an annual performance review.
Perform Daily JSA's and submit to Maintenance Manager Daily.
The Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for checking vessel weekly reports, determining needs and scheduling repairs including management of his own schedule.
The Maintenance Mechanic will provide weekly report sheet using concise, complete notes and submitted by COB every Friday to Maintenance Manager and Superintendent.
The Maintenance Mechanic may receive mechanical tasking assignments from the Maintenance Manager, but works directly for the Superintendent, particularly in regards to projects and day-to-day fleet management.
While working on Great Lakes Dredge and Dock vessels you will keep the Captain advised of the machinery/auxiliary plant status.
The vessel Captain is at all times in charge and responsible overall for the safety of his crew and vessel.
When required, you will assist with shipyard dry-docking and dock-side hull repairs as the GLDD on-site company representative.
While conducting repairs, you will perform on-the-job training with vessel engineers to enhance their engineering knowledge and abilities.

Participate as required in MCIA investigation/review.
Obtain and maintain current passport, visa and TWIC etc.
as required.
Participate in regulatory working groups, project kick-offs and training on behalf of GLDD or such as TSAC (Towing Safety Advisory Committee), USCG etc.
as directed.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Pre-hire physical examinations and drug screening is required as set forth in the Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company Safety Management System (SMS) Manual prior to employment.
The job requires extensive travel both by air and company vehicle.
A valid driver's license and clean driving record is required.
The Tug & Boat Maintenance Mechanic will frequently handle objects weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally carry objects weighing 50 pounds and over for considerable distances.
You are required to push, pull, reach, walk, stand, crawl, kneel, bend, and work in cramped positions over and under machinery of all types for sustained periods of time.
Work involves ascending and descending narrow vertical ladders or staging, often while carrying tools, equipment and parts.
Work is performed inside and outside, underway and moored or in dry-dock, exposing you to the prevailing weather and sea conditions, noise, and intermittent slippery or uneven surfaces.
Frequently, work is performed in cramped areas with minimum light and ventilation, and in areas with high temperatures.
You will be exposed to moving machinery and objects, noise and vibration from machinery, hot surface temperatures, and sharp edges.
Dirt, grease, dampness, exhaust and chemical fumes are frequently encountered.
Various personnel protective devices such as safety shoes, safety glasses, gloves, hard hats, safety harnesses etc are required by company safety policy to be worn when appropriate.
